Enforcing a law that might change drinking behaviour

Drunk man's road crash death on Kangaroo Island sees hotel and duty manager plead guilty to charges - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation):

"A hotel and a duty manager have pleaded guilty in South Australia to charges over serving a drunk man who then died in a road crash on his way home.

Anthony David Read, in his 50s, died when his utility slammed into a tree about six kilometres from the Penneshaw Hotel, in June 2013.

The Magistrates Court was told Mr Read drank at the hotel for about nine hours, had more than 20 drinks and was sold six cans of rum before he left for home.

A hotel employee who served Mr Read three times, Dean Ian Carey, was fined $700 when he faced court recently, but escaped conviction.

At the latest hearing, charges were dropped against the hotel licensee Trevor Roy Jaggard.

The company and duty manager, Richard Mark Purvis, then pleaded guilty to seven offences under liquor licensing laws.

Defence lawyer John Firth said staff of the hotel on Kangaroo Island kept serving Mr Read because he repeatedly said he would not drive home.
